Through the study of three full-length novels and two novellas, Anka Muhlstein will introduce the group to the diversity and complexity of Balzac's work. His novels are not only quick paced thrillers, replete with deep psychological insights, but also an unsurpassed commentary on social and political conditions in Paris and in the French provinces during the first half of the XIXth century. The group will read and discuss Father Goriot (January 31st), Gobseck and Colonel Chabert (Febuary 28th), Cousin Bette (April 25th), and La Rabouilleuse (The Black Sheep) (May 23rd).

Anka Muhlstein was born in Paris in 1935 and has lived in New York, with her husband Louis Begley, since 1974. She has published ten books, biographies and essays and is working on a volume on Proust as a reader. She has been awarded the Goncourt prize of Biography and has twice received the History Prize of the French Academy.
